Bäume spenden Luft und Leben, sind Katalysator und Klimaanlage. So sind Wälder komplexe Ökosysteme und soziale Netze von Natur aus gegeben. Vor allem Regenwälder. Nur ist unsere gute Luft- und Lebensqualität bedenklich und bedrohlich gefährdet.

Der Amazonas ist der grösste Dschungel und auch bekannt als die Lunge der Erde. Seit drei Wochen tobt in Brasilien, Bolivien, Kolumbien, Peru, Paraguay und Venezuela ein flammendes Inferno: Wildfires out of control. Eine feurige Krönung nach der grössten Abholzung des Dschungels in der Geschichte der Menschheit.

Der Amazonas ist grösster CO2-Speicher der Erde, nimmt CO2 auf und speichert Kohlenstoff in Pflanzen und Böden. Über die Hälfte der gesamten Fauna und Flora der Erde lebt dort. Aber sein Einfluss auf andere Ökosysteme ist weitreichender. Er gilt als Klimaanlage der Erde. So kühlt er die Atmosphäre und den Boden ab: Ein Baum im Dschungel kann bis 1000 Liter Wasser in den fliegenden Fluss hochladen. Der fliegender Fluss ist die Feuchtigkeit, die sich über den Amazonas in den Wolken ansammelt, die südlich weiter ziehen und dort Ackerland begiessen.

Unter internationalem Druck hat der brasilianische Präsident Jair Bolsonaro das Militär mobilisiert: 44’000 Soldaten bekämpfen die verheerenden Waldbrände im Amazonas. Auch ein Monsterablöscher ist angeflogen: Ein Supertanker aus Kalifornien. Nur reicht das? Bei weitem nicht. 

Experten warnen nun eingehender vor Tipping Points of No Return. Der Amazonas braucht mindestens 100 Jahre, um sich wieder zu erholen. Überall brennt’s: Im Amazonas, in der Arktis, in Europa, Kongo und Sibirien. Auf der ganzen Welt. Der Waldverlust hat sich derweil um das 350-fache vervielfacht.
